North Kildare Beekeepers Association holds an 9 - Week Beekeeping Course in Mar/Apr each year in The Church, (which is the old DARA Cinema building), Main St., Naas. This is open to beginners and novices and provides a fantastic opportunity to learn the skills required to become a beekeeper. It is open to non-members also. Week 1 — Tuesday 3rd March - Welcome & Registration, Course Introduction. Week 2 — Tuesday 10th March - Occupants of the Hive, their Life Cycle and Functions. Week 3 — Tuesday 24th March - Beekeeping Equipment and Clothing, Beekeeping Terms. Week 4 — Tuesday 31st March - Spring & Summer Management, Weekly Inspections and Record Keeping, Bee Flora. Week 4A — Saturday 4th April - Hive Types and Assembly of Frames, Honey Sections and hives. Week 5 — Tuesday 7th April - Swarms & Swarming. N.B. There will be a separate talk on this evening for Novices on 'Swarm Control Methods' Week 6 — Tuesday 14th April - Bee Health & Hygienic Beekeeping, Diseases Week 7 — Tuesday 21st April - Biseases and Pests of Bees Week 8 — Tuesday 28th April - Honey Removal, Extraction and Processing, Summary of Course with Q & A. Week 9 — Tuesday 5th May - Autumn Feeding, Storage and Care of Equipment, Summary of Course with Q & A. Week 9A — Saturday 9th May - First Outdoor Demonstration at Association Apiaries.
Association apiary visits after course completion are included
** The fees for the course cover your NKBKA membership, your annual beekeepers insurance, membership of the IBAclg and access to the association apiaries. The lecturers are experienced members of the association and are all beekeepers.
